Nurses at Plainview, Huntington, and Syosset Hospitals came to a tentative contract agreement with Northwell Health. Just days before Monday's deadline, negotiators, they have been pushing for better staffing, safer working environments, better pay, and better benefits. They say that there's always compromises that have to be made, but believe that the members will be happy with the new contracts. Union members will review and vote on the contracts next week. Mayor Joe Ganim says under a new state law, municipalities have the option of adopting a red light program to enhance traffic safety by reducing accidents and fatalities at intersections. We're reaching out to the community for input about the possible use of red light cameras at some of our more challenging intersections to help curtail or improve pedestrian safety. "transcript": "Breaking into our newsroom and overnight, 2 alarm fire in Bed-Stuy leaves 6 people hurt. Thank you for joining us here on News 12 Brooklyn. I'm Marcy Jones. News 12's Karina Gary is along Bedford Avenue now speaking with residents and giving us a closer look at that aftermath, Karina. Yes, and the damage from that fire is still evident at this time. If you take a look here behind me, you can see the yellow tape is still blocking people from going in and out of the building. Glass is still on the sidewalk, and there's still burnt up debris as well as fire marshals have been on the scene since early this morning. According to FDNY, the fire broke out just before 5 this morning on the 3rd floor of this Bedford Avenue building, and it took nearly 150. 50 firefighters and emergency personnel to fight the blaze that left 6 people hurt, including 2 firefighters. All were taken to local hospitals where they are in unknown conditions at this time. I spoke with one woman who lives across the street, and she says she saw the whole thing, and everyone was terrified because the ladder was out on the 3rd floor, and they were cutting open the bars, and there was someone on the other side trying to get out. And the cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time. We'll make sure to keep you updated as more information becomes available for now in Bed-Stuy, Karina Gary, Newswell, Brooklyn.",

You will, you will need it here as the steady rain does push in. It is drier on Sunday, can't rule out a spot shower, but overall, the pick of the weekend will be Sunday versus today. Not the best Saturday for sure. You notice on Futurecast hour by hour, that rain does push on in. It's not a major storm, but there could be a soaker of a, of a, a rain shower as we get into 4 or 5. where just for maybe a minute or two it's pouring and then it's out of here back to some light steady rain. That's going to be the rule here. You see Greenpoint, Bushway, Clinton Hill, and down towards Flatbush numbers in the low 40s. So a raw day, a raw feel out there. And again, as previously mentioned, a spot shower may be possible into Sunday morning, but things do dry out later into the morning and into Sunday afternoon. How much rain do you expect across our borough? Well, you do notice numbers getting close to 1 inch of rain, so it's a healthy amount of rain. Not enough to cause any major flooding issues. I mean there might be some pawing on the roadways briefly, but overall, just a raw Saturday. If you can stay inside, probably the plan to do so because it's just going to be gloomy and rather wet. Uh, we noticed the next chance of any precipitation won't arrive until pretty much later into next week, and that could be in the form of a wintry mix too. Uh, so some colder air is on the way here in this extended 10 day forecast, 40s turn to 30s.",

"transcript": "New Jersey Transit is pledging service improvements along the river line light rail system. The agency had been paying a third party $25 million annually to operate the line which runs from Trenton to Camden. Early next year, it will cut out the middleman and take over full authority. NJ transit data showing that the river line regularly has the lowest on-time percentage of the agency's 3 light rail lines. CEO and president Chris Kalori said that the agency is spending a combined $360 million on new rail cars and upgrades. People who ride the cars every single day, 5000 of our valuable customers rely on these cars, and they deserve a car that is modern, and that is the commitment that we made. This was Kalori's first public appearance since the news that he would be staying on to lead New Jersey Transit, as well as taking on a new job as executive director of the Turnpike Authority. He currently makes $280,000 a year from NJT and will take a $1 annual salary from the Turnpike Authority. Kalori telling News 12 that he is continuing as an at-will employee with no new contract. The board still has to approve the appointment. He says that the two agencies share the same goal. One is a roadway system. The other one is a mass transit system, but their overall objective is the same, which is how do you move the residents of New Jersey safely and efficiently. You have a segment on News 12 called Toll of Commuting. You focus on all modes. Our job here is the same. We will focus on all modes to make sure the residents are served best. "transcript": "While some in New Jersey pay for their commute with money, time, or patience, as News Twelve's Amanda Eustace reports. In today's toll of commuting, others have to muster up the courage just to get to work. Do you want to talk about New Jersey's bravest commuters, and no, they're not the ones battling traffic. They're the ones standing right here on a sliver of pavement wedged between speeding cars all the way to pick up a bus on the side of the highway. Let's face it, the cars are going right by. They're going 60, 70 miles an hour, one. Accidents can happen, right? It's just after 6:40 in the morning and Margaret Mans is on her way to work in New York, picking up the same bus here along Route 3 outside Clifton Commons for the past 5 years. Very convenient actually. I just wish that the enclosure was a little bit more secure, and she's not the only one. Others taking it say if you catch the bus. The sun is fully up. It's a quick 30 minute ride into New York Port Authority. It's busy. You get a seat though, and Jersey Transit is very consistent, so they, they, they run like clockwork. My coworkers think I'm crazy for doing it, but it's, it's reliable. There's a lot of buses passing in the morning and they always stop. So for me. It's the only way to go, but these are some of the most unusual stops in the state located on highway shoulders, entrance ramps, and sometimes narrow concrete islands. This one down there is better because they have like a little house that you can just protect yourself. This one, if you have a little something at least when it's raining, when it's super cold, but I mean. New Jersey Transit says it's up to the municipality to request a bus shelter be installed, and they'll do it at no cost to the town, county, or state entity depending on who owns the roadway. I mean, it makes sense. They get right on the highway. They allow them to have express buses, and they're in central locations. I wish more evenly divided up among some of the towns. It's a little frightening when the weather is iffy, but it's so convenient that I wouldn't go any other way. So for these riders, the toll of commuting isn't just time and money. It's standing inches from traffic and hoping every driver stays in their lane. In Clifton, Amanda Eustace, Newswell, New Jersey.",

"transcript": "Well, the new year is bringing higher tolls for commuters across Port Authority tunnels and bridges. This as many are heading back to their normal routines after the holiday break. News Twelve's Jill Croce is in Jersey City with what this means for drivers, and she has their reaction. With the new year comes new toll rates for Port Authority bridges and tunnels like here at Jersey City's Holland Tunnel. Eastbound traffic is now faced with a 3% toll hike, and that's regardless of EZPass or not. Driver Amacei Luskovic isn't thrilled with the move. They're getting into our wallets. And it's really not much you can do about it. He works in New York but tries to get out of driving a car as much as he can, taking a bus, putting the bike in a bus, and driving in Manhattan in a bicycle from a bus stop to my workplace, but I cannot always do it, especially now in the winter when it's getting a little colder. In addition to the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels, the George Washington, Bayonne, and Gothels bridges, and the Outerbridge crossing are now seeing the same increase since Sunday. Just after midnight, drivers will pay 1,679 with an EZPass during peak hours and then pay 1,479 cents with an EPass during off-peak hours. The Port Authority lists peak hours as weekdays 60 to 10 a.m., 4 to 8 p.m., and then Saturdays and Sundays 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Driver Mir Ali has mixed reviews on the concept of rate increases. I agree with them in certain ways, but not in like. Every year, any driver still using pay by plate will spend over $23 at any crossing. The fee comes at a time when just last month the Port Authority Board of Commissioners approved a capital plan for 2026 to 2035. The agency receives no taxpayer funding from the states it serves. "transcript": "Welcome back. From an increase in the gas tax to higher tolls, it's going to cost more to drive this year in New Jersey. New Jersey's gas tax is now up by over 4 cents a gallon as of the new year. The total is near 50 cents a gallon. Drivers in the state are paying some of the highest rates in the entire country, and it's another toll hike for the turnpike and Parkway, a 3% increase in effect. That's the 5th consecutive rise in tolls. If you're heading into the city, Port Authority is reaching deeper into your pockets as well. Starting Sunday, you'll see about a 3% increase, plus another 25 cents hike. That means if you cross the George Washington Bridge, Lincoln Holland tunnels, your EPs charge increases over 70 cents.",

"transcript": "Well, a new year will mean higher costs for New Jersey drivers. It's getting a whole lot more expensive to get around our state. In today's toll of commuting, News 12 New Jersey's Amanda Eustace takes a closer look at what is changing in 2026 and what it's going to mean for your commute. For New Jersey commuters, the new year is bringing higher costs when it comes to getting behind the wheel. The state's Gas taxes going up, meaning every time you pull up to the pump, you're expected to pay just a little bit more to keep moving. Don't like it. We were just getting used to it going back down, so now it's going back up, kind of going backwards to me. New Jersey's gas tax rate will cost 4.2 cents more per gallon in 2026. That will make the total gas tax rate nearly 49.1 cents per gallon. Close to some of the highest in the country, the money will be used to support the Transportation Trust Fund, which improves infrastructure in the state. For people like James Glopa, who works in construction and covers northern New Jersey. He says sometimes he fills up twice a day. That price adds up and it's a major hit to us. We're just trying to make a living. gas, it's part of our job and it takes a huge part of our profit, but it's not just fuel costs that are rising. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority has approved a 3% toll increase on both the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway. It's something that's happened every year since 2020. This means drivers could be paying roughly 16 cents more on many routine toll trips. This year for many who travel these major roadways daily, the increases add up, especially as budgets are stretched. The cost of living is going up and paid wages are not going up, so it's a time where we need to come together and try to fight for what we work hard for. That's how they get us every time and they say that we have to pay it by force, but yet we don't see no change behind it. So I hope we see a bigger change, a better change this year, and drivers say they'll still get to where they're going. They just wish it didn't cost so much to get there. "transcript": "Commuting is tough, tedious, and, well, time consuming, but one bus company in the Garden State is working to change that, making it safer and smoother with all the help of technology. New New Jersey's Amanda Eustace shows us how Academy bus is taking the toll of commuting before drivers even hit the road. Amanda, come on in. This is central dispatch. It's a look inside where every Academy bus trip really begins here in Hoboken, we average about 10. 50 vehicles and drivers daily, but company-wide we are monitoring and overseeing about 1500. Think of it as the brain of the operation, a room filled with monitors, maps, and constant movement. Take a look over here on the map. You'll see our footprint is pretty large on the east coast and at the center of it all, suck on technology, very easy to monitor hours of service, reaching out to drivers, monitoring their behaviors. It can actually divert you to use an. Alternate route. It can ask you to check your messages, tracking every bus on the road in real time. We can hover over any of the vehicles here and I can see the speed. I can see the driver. I could see the date, time of how long it's been idling, how long it's been running, everything like that, everything that would be relevant to our operations. And outside this is where all that information meets the road, tracking everything the driver needs to know, including information. Prior trips mileage and mileage. Each bus is equipped with nearly 8 cameras, one that monitors the passengers getting on and off the bus, the other monitoring the driver, another that pays attention to the passengers already on the bus, and the rest of the cameras on the exterior of the bus, helping give drivers a leg up and an extra set of eyes on the road. The cameras are really for the driver's protection and our passengers and. And actually the whole state or wherever we're working for their protection. It allows us to go back and review not only negative behaviors but show positive behaviors and reward positive behaviors. Academy is even going as far as testing out artificial intelligence and pre-collision warning software that would help assist drivers before a crash occurs. Now with inner city increasing, the airlines having issues, rail railroads having issues. Buses are becoming more of an important and integral part of our transportation system, and I think finally being realized in the US. We want to show them that we are taking the measures to improve as things change over time and keep them at ease. That's why this system and the watchful eyes inside dispatch give them the support they need to take the toll out of commuting in Hoboken, Anita Eustace.",
